Problem:
The Al-Furaa Regional School, located in an off-grid Bedouin community in the Negev desert, lacks access to conventional wastewater treatment, resulting in inadequate sanitation and water shortages. Without a sustainable solution, untreated wastewater poses health risks to students and staff, limits agricultural opportunities, and contributes to environmental degradation in the surrounding area.
Solution:
Laguna Innovation’s off-grid wastewater treatment system at the Al-Furaa Regional School provides a sustainable solution for water reuse in an arid, water-scarce region. By safely treating and recycling wastewater for irrigation, the system enhances local agriculture, supports food security, and reduces dependence on limited freshwater resources. As part of the school’s infrastructure, it also serves as a hands-on educational tool, teaching students about sustainable water management and environmental stewardship. This initiative is particularly vital for the Bedouin community, demonstrating how decentralized water solutions can improve health, self-sufficiency, and resilience in off-grid settings.
